Ms. Colette Galby

College of Home Science, Nirmala Niketan, is a Christian Minority Institution. Managed by the Society, registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and a Public Trust Act 1950 and all of those who are members of the congregation of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in India. The Society is managed by a Governing Body whose Ex-officio Chairperson is the Provincial of the Province of India of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary. Today the College of Home Science, Nirmala Niketan stands as one of the pioneering institutions catering to women’s higher education in India. It was through the vision and foresight of our pioneer members of the society namely Ms. Maria Paiva Couceiro, Colette Galby and Dorothy Baker that the Polytechnic and the College of Home Science came into existence.

It was soon after India gained Independence, that these women envisioned an important and active role for the Indian women in society. In 1953, Miss. Pavia and Miss. Colette Galby came to Mumbai, they managed to get a flat at Gobind Mahal at Marine Drive. Soon after this, a plot of land was purchased at New Marine Lines and the building was started. Miss. Galby, the Founder Principal on 21st November 1955 began the One-year Certificate Course in Home Science with thirteen students and two faculty. Ever since then, over the years the College has grown by leaps and bounds, obtaining the affiliation of the University of Mumbai for three-year B.Sc. Degree Course in Home Science, two-year M.Sc. Degree Course in five different specializations, Ph.D. Course in Home Science and multiple self-financed diploma and certificate programs for value addition.
This has been possible with the selfless service of the faculty of the college in the field of education of young women empowering them with life-oriented, career-oriented and community-oriented knowledge and skills. Enormous credits are due to the unstinted support of the Management Nirmala Niketan Institute of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary. Our growth is being fostered by the love of our students alumnae and their parents. The college hasgrown from strength to strength due to the positive collaborations with industry, recruiters, academic institutes, NGOs and GO bodies. We believe ourselves to be the facilitators of our creative evolution!
